Ferrets are members of the weasel family. They need to eat meat and only meat because of this. Also like most small mammals they have very high metabolisms. They need to eat high calorie meals and they need to eat many times throughout the day. If you missed it go ahead and check out our last article that outlines a plan to keep your ferret fed in a healthy and consistent way.
Ferret Foods: What works and what to avoid
It is pretty easy to find ferret food at your local pet store. make sure to read the ingredient list so that you know the food is not fish based. This is unnatural for a ferret because fish are not part of their normal diets. Your ferret might be especially picky when it comes to eating and will avoid fish to the point that they may starve. If you find a food that is based on or contains fish it is most likely designed for a mink.
Another thing to avoid entirely is any food that has grain in it. In the wild a ferret would only eat vegetable material if they consume the stomach of their prey. This is actually pretty common among carnivores in the wild. Ferrets that regularly eat grain containing foods are more susceptible to getting a kind of cancer called insulinoma. Obviously, this is terrible for the health of your pet ferret.
Ferrets like to hide their leftover food. This is important to be aware of if you feed them outside of their cage because you may end up finding kibble stored in nooks and crannies around your home.
When they hunt in the wild ferrets eat their prey right away. They are not scavengers and are not as resistant to food borne illnesses as some other carnivores. It is important that if you decide to feed your ferret a whole prey diet that you keep the prey refrigerated and fresh.
Ferrets and Digestion
Ferrets have a very short digestive system and it only takes 3 to 4 hours for their food to travel all the way through. This is why it is important to feed your ferret multiple meals throughout the day. For more information on this check out our article here.
